The Russian Academy of Arts, the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts, S. Gerasimov All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography and New Institute of Culturology invite you to take part in the International Researce Conference “From Color to Light”: Problems of Interaction of Arts at the Turn of the Millenium”, that will take place in the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) and S. Gerasimov State Institute of Cinematography (3 Wilhelm Pieck street, Moscow) on October 17-18, 2019.

The 20 th century has marked the desire of artists to overcome boundaries of traditional types and genres of art to a wider development of the categories of space and time, the convergence of plastic arts with music, theater and cinema.

Representatives of avant-garde art of the 1910s-1920s actively searched in the above direction showing interest in scientific discoveries in the field of color, light and sound matching them with the ideas of synesthesia and synthesis of art, as well as absorbed new technologies. The interest in the dynamization of painting, “visual music” resulted in the fact, that the light very often was used an artist’s instrument.

The synthetic concepts of Vasily Kandinsky, “optophonia” of Vladimir Baranov-Rossine, “light and space modulators” of Laszlo Moholy-Nady, “cinema painting” by Viking Eggeling, Walter Ruttmann, Gerhard Richter prove the development of the idea “from color to light” and birth of media-art. Specifying the problem of interdisciplinary of this phenomenon we offer to trace the possible way of its development from the early 20 th till the early 21 st century in the world art process, as well as to reveal either fragmentation and marginality or the logic of its possible development up to the creativity of modern representatives.

Not limited to the development of new technologies the idea “from color to light” can be understood metaphorically and interpreted in the context of aesthetic platform or philosophical basis of creativity, its spiritual vector.

Topics to be discussed:
-the idea “from color to light” in the 20 th -21 st century art: history and theory;
-light as the principle or one of the main carriers of the idea in the art concept;
